Chupacabra Road Kill
Carcass adds to chupacabra lore in Texas
June 04, 2008

The South Texas hunt for el chupacabra continues.

The dread of south-of-the-border goatherds -- chupacabra means "goat sucker" in Spanish -- became an Internet-fueled topic last summer when three hairless doglike creatures became road kill south of Cuero in DeWitt County.

Another met a similar fate May 8, this time north of Cuero. The man who claimed it turned it over to Phylis Canion, whose ranch south of Cuero is near where the original three were killed.

Canion, a nutritionist and owner of a retail sportswear shop, has become known around the world as the "Chupacabra Lady," after selling thousands of T-shirts to commemorate last summer's findings.

"The guy called me," she said, "and he said 'I got one, you want it?' So he brings it in, and I'm saying, 'Whoa, dude, this one looks like mine!'

"Now we're talking."

The South Texas version of the chupacabra mystery might have ended late last year when DNA tests requested by Canion stated that the creature was Canis latrans, or a common coyote. A few skeptics have added that sarcoptic mange probably caused the animals' hairlessness.

Perhaps, Canion said, there is no supernatural component to the legend of the fanged monster with fiery red eyes, big claws, and distinct ridge along its spine.

Maybe, she added, there's a scientific explanation for the mythical creature, which would make it a cryptid -- an animal whose existence has been reported but not confirmed.

"I never disputed that it did not have some sort of coyote in it," Canion said of the tests conducted at Texas State University at San Marcos. "What I disputed was the tests were not involved or detailed enough to tell me what else could have been in it.

"Or why it had no hair."

Another round of tests was ordered, this time at the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at the University of California, Davis, which specializes in animal forensic science.

The UC Davis lab stated that the animal was a cross between coyote and Mexican wolf.

Wolves, Canion said, sometimes have blue eyes, as did her "chupe." Peepers like that, she asserted, can reflect red in the glare of goatherds' lantern or flashlight.

Canion, a nutritionist, said the animal's diet may provide an explanation for its proclivity to suck blood. She said she lost dozens of chickens that were sucked dry of their blood.

She suggested that the animals might crave blood because of a vitamin deficiency that is being passed to their offspring.

The DNA tests did not explain why the creature had no fur except for some wisps of hair along its back. Those strands, however, could explain the back ridge in the chupacabra legend, she said.

Perhaps, Canion added, the animal carries a baldness gene.

"Could this thing be genetically hairless and it got passed on?" she asked. A pathology expert at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, however, had another explanation.

"Sarcoptic mange -- that's exactly what it is," Dr. Danny B. Pence said, referring to an infestation of tiny burrowing mites in the skin.

Canion said she wants UC Davis to test the carcass she received May 8.

"I don't know," Canion said, "maybe now we've finally found the chupacabra."

its quite possibly real, just a rare and elusive animal. Theres no reson for people to doubt it existence as its not a ludricrous story. Some of the sighting stories i've read on this page are obviously fake, Quite sad really, people making up stories. its creating bad press for an animal that should be protected if it really does exist.

they found one but they think it is a dog that caught the mange.

I live in the Philippines. My Lola and Lolo have tons of chickens. Every 6th fullmoon for over 6 years, 6 chickens (not that I have noticed it's 6,6,6 which is the mark of the devil ) will die and have a bitemark on the neck forming a semi-circle with two dots on the middle. So, Lolo put a dummy chicken which is inflatable and put it near a pang-pang ( a rocky side of the hill ) at the middle of the night, he herd a loud bang! and some dog whining the dog was kinda like having red eyes, long and slender body and a very long fangs.

Yea.. there's ALWAYs been stuff about the Chupacabra.. even in Georgia. A couple of my friends have "seen" the Georgia Chupacabra.. And i don't believe it so i'm going to see for myself.

This is true. i've seen the photographs of these animals. The fangs are abnormally large for a coyote, but too large for a wolf, and the skin is a grayish brown color, but tough like an elephants skin. It was really pretty creepy.

Also, Zack, what your friend saw was a bigfoot, not a chupa.
Added by Hannah the biologist (not really) on January 29, 2009
Um, Crazy Old Cook, what your talking about is the reptid alein. They don't look like chupas. The Chupas aren't aleins. They're canid hybrids that have a genentic thing where theh have no hair. You got your facts wrong...

I saw it once, it was small and had horns, it was scary!!!
Added by juggernaut on January 08, 2009
the chupacabra is a mixed breed between a wild dog and radiation. where old legendary spots of these creatures were tested positive for several chemicals including a miniscule trace of murcurey.

I like chupacabras, they're cool in a sinister sort of way. The hairless creature that was found is very unusual...it doesn't really fit any pre-determined descriptions of a chupacabra. It would be very awesome if it turned out to be a whole new species of mammal.

Added by zogart king on December 06, 2008
the so called "chupacabra" is actually a form of carnivoris, hairless hyenas, originating in the lower south americas. Whether having horns and humaniod appearance is completly a myth. For adults told their children these stories long ago, possibly back in the early 1700s, to keep the children inside at night.
Added by werewolfie bloodwolf on December 05, 2008

R U WITH ME OR R U WITH ME?

To the dude that wrote the story of his friend dying on Oct, 31, that's really bad. Yet, I wonder how someone could die just by their arm coming off. Strange creature . . . I really do believe all this stuff. Look at all the evidence there is, plus all the tests, it adds up. I don't care, either, if it is some sort of coyote or something. Everyone can believe what they wanna, and I believe all this is true. Scientists feel that all science is, is proof. When Wegener was trying to prove the Tectonic Plate Theory, or Continental Drift, whatever it was was real, it took scientists a while to believe it because they're wasn't no proof for why it happened. I think that "Champ" and "Nessie" are both real for certai reasons. In a nutshell, I really do believe all this. Think of all the species of animals, each one. A lot, right? Yes. It's no different that all this, like Bigfoot, could be a different animal. Or maybe a genetically deformed man . . . Tell you the truth, who knows for sure? Everything's different. And, as I've said, everyone can believe what they want. And this girl right here believes that all these legends and stuff are true! P.S. This websight rules! I'm writing a book (I'm hoping to get it published) and It's sort of fantasy/science fiction book. I'm looking for all the right kinds of mythical creatures for my book, and I got all the answers here.

Most people say this stuff is real, and that this site is sufficient proof. Well, if it is, and you can prove it, I will believe you. Why would the chupacabra have no fur? & why would there be any in Georgia if there is no sheep in Atlanta? I do believe in them, but I don't think we've just suddenly stumbled upon their existence right now.
Added by AJ on November 11, 2008
I do bileve that the Chupacabra is one of the most tamed creatures. Truthfully the Chupe was actually a specially bred dog/bat that was meant for keeping a birds eye on sheep and to hunt for their shepard.... i know this from a VRY valuable rescource.............For I own one.

were i come from there have been rumors going around that there have been chupacabra sightings i live in w.a and me and my m8 were out camping and were saw somthing witch looked to be a wolf with horns and huge spines going down its back, so the next day we went serching for it and found nothing, nothing but giant paw prints. we ran home as fast as we could and told our parents but the didnt belive us so i got my farthers rifle and we went out camping the next night.....how stupid we saw it and as i drew my farthers gun towards it it bit my friends arm right off. As he lay there in my arms bleeding like hell i shot in the air a few times and it ran off screeching a hidious sound that could deafin you, i rushed home to get my farther but he wasnt there so i went to my m8's house to get his farther but he wasnt there ither so i ran back into the forrest (we were camping in the forrest) i knew exactly were i had put my m8 and had givin him the rifle with a full magazine (clip) and i herd the gun go off so i ran back as fast as i could only to see my m8 my best m8 mauled to bits and as i cryed on his chest the beast came back so i grabed the gun and shot it clean between the eyes, i draged my m8 back to my house, blood driping from his chest and neck, no arm, and as my mother came through the door he died

Re:katara When i was at my cuz house we were shotting bows and arrows and mine went over fence. We went to retrive it in a field we saw it. It landed next to a terrier with a hole in its head and stomach, there was no tounge, no eyes, its heart/other organs were gone, and its back was torn open. Whats weird i live in CA.
