Manananggal
(a.k.a. wakwak or penanggalan in Malay folklore)
From the folklore of the Philippines we find the Manananggal that terrorizes the Visayan islands. Locals hang large amounts of garlic around their houses as a deterrent which brings to mind vampires.
With the face and body of a beautiful older woman all normality ends there. This creature features leathery wings but most impressive, and disturbing of all, is able to detach its torso and fly away leaving its legs behind. The severed lower torso is left standing and it is said to be the more vulnerable of the two halves. Sprinkling salt or smearing crushed garlic or ash on top of the standing torso is fatal to the creature. The upper torso then would not be able to rejoin and will die at daybreak.
Known to feed on pregnant women, using their hideous proboscis-like tongue to suck out the hearts of fetuses or the blood of an unsuspecting, sleeping victim. Legend also says the manananggals propagate themselves by spewing a black chick into someones mouth.
If you find yourself infected by a manananggal, your friends can dispel the chick inside you by hanging you upside down from a tree and fumigating you, or they could spin you round and round until you vomits the chick due to dizziness. Either way it sounds like you're in for a lot of fun! | Posted in categories: [Folklore] | Comments | Added by bisdak95 on June 06, 2009 | | When I was 23 yrs old, I had an experience that you could say was creepy. I was coming home from visiting my then girlfriend, it was around 2AM.I walked about 1/4 of a kilometer to get to the main road and the people I saw was 2 "lab-aseras"(women fish mongers) waiting for jeepnies to take them to the market.I have seen these to women before. They were across the street from were I was walking, they looked at me expressionless as I passed by. After walking a hundred yards or so, I looked back to see if they were still there. They were not. The funny thing about it was that there were no jeepnies that passed by. My stride all of a sudden became faster. As I was about to cross the street, the birds perched on one of the trees flew away like something was coming and it wasn't me. My stride was even faster this time, I was about 1/2 a kilometer away from my house. The narrow street leading to my house is lined with coconut trees, "chicos", mango trees and some street lights. Just above the tree line and the street lights I could hear the flapping of a large pair of wings. I could hear it land a couple trees behind me, then would fly over to the next tree in front of me.I was being stalked by something with a large wings. I was sure of it. By this time my stride has broken into a fast jog. I was trying to scan the tree line hoping not to find anything. A quarter of the from my house, the flapping got louder and this time I could feel the air move, and with it a strong odor. It wasn't garbage that was sitting in the curb but something foul. I was running by this time. My heart was racing, but my thought was racing even faster. What is this that is stalking me? Cris crossing the street just above the tree lines. Approximately 15-20 meters away from the front gates of my house I heard it! At first it sounded like a large crow but instead of a crowing sound it was a gurgly "wak". I did not stop to look what was making that sound. I was more interested on how to get over the gates and in to the house as fast as I could. I climbed over our gates with just one leap, ran to the front of the house banged on the door calling our servant's name "Marit! Marit! Ablihi ko!(Marit! Marit! Let me in!) Not 3 seconds later Marita was scrambling to open the door for me. She looked scared. Ater letting me in the house, she ran back to her quarters as if to hide. This time I could hear the "wak-Wak" sound getting louder. It was across the street one time, the it flew to the tree behind our house, then it finally landed on one of the palm tree right across from my bedroom window all the while making that sound "wak-wak". I could hear the palm tree shake. The window panes of my windows were close yet I could feel something trying to look in. Then finally the "wak-wak" sound got faster and towards the end of the sound it turned into a woman's laugh. Then it stopped. It was quite outside. The leaves were quite, the branches were still, not even crickets. It was quite. I sat on my bed wondering what had just happened. Was it real or just my imagination. My alarm clock went off, it was 6 AM, the sun was up. I went to do my routine, took a shower, got dressed, went to eat break fast. My mother, my older sister was already eating breakfast, unusually quite, when our servants came out of the kitchen they were looking at each other as if trying to confirm something. I finally broke the silence and asked " naka do-nog mo gabi-i? (did you hear "it" last night?" My mother, my sister, and our 2 servants nodded their heads at the same time. That was the last time I came home from anywhere late and by myself. |
| Added by mark of the slayers on May 28, 2009 | | it is possible to have manananggal in other countries because a lot OFW(overseas filipino workers) go to foreign countries like the united states to support there families here in the philippines or........... they want to try other pregnant peoples babies. they are true i heard a family story that when my cousin was not yet born my aunts and uncle encountered a manananggal...my uncle heard a loud bang on the roof top he went up to see my pregnant aunt(who was sleeping) when he opened the door to check up on them he saw a long proboscis like tongue heading toward my aunt with no hesitation he got a sundang(PHILIPPINE sword) and grab the tongue and sliced it off then he heard screaming of a woman and saw a batlike figure flew off to the south... |

Hmmm I wander what would happen if you cut off this creatures head would it die or maybe you could try to burn it to death hmmm. Small hint when you want to see this vampire thing don't seek it out let it come to you bait it out. It works trust me. |

| Added by donica on March 05, 2009 | | well, im from the phillipines and this things are freaky but the truth is they are real. my cousin lives in bicol and onced told me that a manananggal was planning to take her mothers baby, lucky for her.. her dad was there..and theres this one too..its not a vampire but its a creature found in bicol it flies on top of roof tops, it finds a hole and then it gets its freaky long toungue in it and tris to lick a pregnant womans stomach, they say that any woman who is licked by this creature can certainly lose her baby...weird and scary..but TRUE!!! |
| Added by Amykinz on February 23, 2009 | | Eww! That's nasty!!! But actually,I've heard of worse. In Africa there is a vampiric being who has hooks for feet and sits in yew trees waiting for someone to walk beneath it. When they do,it hooks them with its feet and drags them up,then comenses to drink their blood. I just shudder when I think of somethings feet being hooked through you! |

| Added by lloyd on January 13, 2009 | | this thingy is really for real. the whole story is. once you wanted to be a manananggal you would have to put a potion in your skin during full moons. you need to put that potion in your skin during 6 consecutive full moons. and then you'll be a manananggal. i don'd know what is the recipe for the lotion but some says it is pretty STINKY and manananggal also mimics some of the victims friends so that it could be easier for them to EAT their victims. others says that you can only know that it is a manananggal and not your friend if you look at it directly in the eyes and you can see yourself upside-down |
| Added by Olivia and Lucy on January 13, 2009 | | We saw a electrifing mannananaggal roaming the streets of Honley in England with a floaty coal black cloak just revealing the face but what gave it away that it was a repeat the manananggal of we might only be 9 good eye sight for this occasion.
