Mythical Androsian Chickcharnie
Creature of Andros, largest of the Bahamian islands
May 08, 2008
At 2,300 square miles, Andros is the largest of the Bahamian islands. It's also the most mysterious, its porous, limestone base riddled with swamps, creeks and underground tunnels and caverns. As a result of this unforgiving landscape, Andros remains sparsely populated - despite its 30-mile proximity to Nassau - with just a few hardy villages dotting its eastern shores.

On its surface, pine forests dominate the horizon, bases tangled with flora commonly used for bush-medicine remedies. These dense shaded forests, dotted with limestone craters, are a prime breeding ground for mythical beasts and spooky tales of warning.

These elfin, birdlike creatures have piercing red eyes, three fingers, three toes and a tail, which they use to hang from trees. Chickcharnies live in the forest and build nests by joining two pine trees together at the top.

When sightseeing on Andros, carry flowers or bright bits of cloth with you to charm these mischievous creatures. Legend says if you see a chickcharnie and show it respect, you'll be blessed with good luck for the rest of your life. Be careful not to sneer at it, however, or your head will turn completely around!

Skeptics claim that a 2-foot-high, three-toed, burrowing owl who lived in these forests until its extinction in the 16th century - was the inspiration for the myth, while others claim to this day to have seen an actual chickcharnie themselves.
