Bringing Myths and Legends to Life...
Lady Gryphon's Mythical Realm Presents
| | Mythical Realm Blog Myth, Fantasy, History and Sci-Fi News | The Water Horse Legend of the Deep Fun movie for the whole family? | | April 25, 2008 | | The story revolves around a young boy who brings a mysterious egg home from the beach and ends up raising a mythical creature of Scottish lore.
Set against the Scottish backdrop of World War II, this is a welcomingly mature fantasy flick. There's no forced kiddie jokes or easy toilet humor, just a nice straightforward adventure and a "Daddy story" that would make Spielberg misty. The plot is a little clichéd as far as "child finds something magical and hides it from his parents" standards go, but it doesn't talk down to its intended young audience, who will eat up the magical creature and the feel-good message.
While I found it to be enjoyable, this movie was simply not made with the idea of keeping little ones engaged. You'll find some classic kiddy moments (such as the dog running across the table during a fine meal), but they are lost through the movie and replaced by serious discussions about Angus' father, Lewis' past, Anne's stress and World War II.
Also, there are a few moments in the movie that could be frightening to some children. They called it the Lock Ness monster, and at times in the movie it is exactly that... a monster. I let my 5 year old watch it and while he enjoyed it, I don't think it was a big hit. In his words, "That was good. (shrug) Can I stay up a bit longer?".
I did have him take a potty break during the Waterhorse eating the big bad doggy after being driven insane from army men bombing part. Don't worry, it was easy to see it coming. | Posted in categories: [Movie] | Comments | Added by Black Dragon on April 30, 2008 | | I Watched The Movie Only Because Like Most I AM IntrigedBy The Legend Of The Lock But I Did Not Feel It DId Justice To The Mysterious Happenings At Lock Ness. |
